Window Styles
A window opens up to whatever you want it to, and so, making a suitable choice is extremely important. Make a choice only after understanding what you expect from your window style, and whether or not that type goes well with the rest of your house. You also need to take the climate into consideration Below are a few types of windows that are available for you to pick from:
A sliding window is the one that has sashes that must be slid horizontally for the window to open. This window has just one flaw, and that is that it offers partial or lesser ventilation. However, because this type of window has sashes, these can be removed, cleaned and fixed back into its original place. Another good thing about this type of window is that it is not at all heavy on the pocket. Also, you can expect to have a lot of energy stored in.
A little push is all it takes to open your casement window wide, and that is the reason that this type of window is a great source of ventilation. Both the sides of this type of window can be reached, and so cleaning is hassle free. The usual casement windows function on traditional hinges, but the latest ones with pivot mechanism are also easily available.
The only thing that differs in an awning and a casement window is the position where it is hinged. In a casement window, hinging is on the side, whereas awning windows are hinged on the top. Hopper windows are hinged only at the bottom, and are usually only located on lower walls.
Jalousie windows are made up of glass slats that are arranged to form a window. There is always an element of risk that is associated with a Jalousie window and these are not considered to be safe. This window must be cranked open, and then the slats tilt to provide ventilation.
Fixed pane windows are sealed, and cannot be opened at any time. It is best suited for climatic conditions that are not really favorable, and require the continuous use of a cooler or a heater.
A double hung window has one sash hung from the top, and the other from the bottom. One sash has to be slid on the other to open, and that is why only one of the two halves of a double hung window can be opened. This window is quite often seen in most American homes, and the only problem is that of ventilation because only one half of the double hung window can be opened. To deal with that, open the upper portion of one double hung window and the lower sash of the other double hung window that is opposite to the first one. So you have fresh air coming in, and stale air going out simultaneously.
A single hung window works on the same mechanism as the double hung windows, except that in this type of window, only one sash can be opened up.
Bay window is a classy option that is either in the double hung form, or in the casement form. What sets this type of window apart is that it sticks out from the wall. The formation is such that one window is in the centre and the other two sections of the window spread out of the wall in equal proportion on either side.
A bow window comprises of over three sections that stick out from the wall to form a bow like bend.
Tilt turn windows tilt from the top. The central lock of a tilt turn window is what makes it an extremely safe option, and a little more tilting can turn it into an emergency exit too. Apart from that, it is convenient to clean and looks extremely neat.
Egress windows are usually found in bedrooms. These windows also serve as an emergency exit due to their big size. These are big enough to meet the requirements for an emergency exit, defined by the local building code for an emergency exit.
A storm window, as the name says, protects against storms by creating a pocket of space between the regular window and the storm window. This makes it the perfect padding against adverse climatic conditions.
